Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD)

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is an approach to achieving reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions that is currently under negotiation at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). REDD+ includes the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries. A REDD+ mechanism with robust environmental and social safeguards could offer an effective climate abatement strategy, provided it is linked to a post-2012 climate agreement with strong binding CO2 emission reduction targets for industrialized nations.
