IUCN’s office in eastern and southern Africa supports REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) processes in a number countries and recently helped the Southern African Development Community (SADC) facilitate a regional workshop aimed at developing a regional REDD strategy.

IUCN’s work in this region seeks to ensure that climate change related policies, plans and strategies emphasize the role of ecosystems (forests, drylands, marine, coastal and wetlands) in supporting people’s livelihoods. Paramount among IUCN’s aims is the assessment and management of risks associated with climate change including the spread of invasive species, increased vulnerability of communities to floods and drought and the resulting changes in the delivery of ecosystem goods and services.
