Oceans for the future - How can we achieve marine reserve targets?

With Rio +20 comes the opportunity to highlight and reinforce the commitments that nations across the globe have already made to our oceans. A healthy and resilient marine environment is crucial to achieving sustainable development and securing marine resources for present and future generations. Why then has progress towards marine protection been so slow, where are the major gaps and what can realistically be done to fill those gaps and meet international targets? These are all questions the Marine Reserves Coalition (MRC) will be addressing at Rio +20, in light of the vital role healthy oceans play in sustainable development and in the social and economic well-being of human populations across the globe. Bringing together a mixture of scientists, policy experts and decision-makers, the MRC side event will reinforce international targets for marine protection and outline the road to achieving those targets through the designation of marine reserves.
At the crossroads of conservation and development: transboundary natural resource governance for enhanced cooperation, security and livelihoods in border regions

IUCN WCPA’s Transboundary Conservation Specialist Group, together with the IUCN Secretariat and the Italian Ministry of Cooperation, are convening a side event at the Rio+20 conference regarding the role that transboundary conservation can play in developing the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development and supporting a Green Economy. Kathy MacKinnon will be Moderator of the Panel, that will also include the WCPA Chair, Nik Lopoukhine.
Mountain Connectivity Conservation Across Large-Scale Landscapes

Speakers Needed
The Mountains and Connectivity Conservation Team from the IUCN WCPA, the Tropical Science Center and other partners share experience and lessons learned form several connectivity conservation initiatives that address the issues of mountain sustainable developement in different countries. A panel debate involving national and regional leadership that addresses the critical questions determined by Rio+20 will be offered.
