Chair's Corner: IUCN CEC Newsletter March 2014
17 March 2014 | News story
"I am looking back on the first year in office as the CEC Chair and it has indeed been an eventful journey. In this e-Newsletter, we share some recent news items from CEC members plus a summary of CEC activities from the Annual Report," writes CEC Chair Juliane Zeidler.
One of our last big events in 2013 was the first CEC Thought Leaders Deep Dive exploring the 'Human Dimensions of Biodiversity'. Focusing conservation efforts on understanding how people take action and how we can change behaviours is at the heart of this thinking – and CEC is taking a lead in advancing this agenda.
As 2014 unfolds, we are aiming to achieve some key deliverables:
- Support regional activities of CEC members in South and Meso-America, China, and West and Central Africa. We are developing MoUs with valued partners in China: the Beijing Forest Society and Parks Department of International Cooperation, and the Center for Environmental Education & Communications (CEEC);
- Organize at least one 2014 Deep Dive meeting tofocus on how to achieve better conservation outcomes through improved strategic communication;
- Implement the work stream ‘Inspiring a New Generation’ at the IUCN World Parks Congress in Sydney 12 to 19 November 2014;
- Establish an interactive web-based tool that facilitates the think tank and expert exchange aspirations of the Commission’s membership. Watch for the launch of the new CEC Newsblog in the coming weeks!
Meanwhile, I encourage everyone to post often on the CEC Facebook page and to make use of the CEC Twitter community. Over the past year our social media outreach has expanded and grown considerably and we are hoping to further this in the future.
Also online, IUCN has now established the Union Portal – a truly useful asset to our Commissions’ operations. All of you should have received the login credentials in December. If not – please recover your password via the IUCN Portal and start connecting anew. We like to make an active effort to connect with you, our membership, via all these mobile and virtual devices and platforms to support network growth, exchange and use. But of course, we need you to sign up and start the conversation!
I am absolutely looking forward to a lot of interaction, joint learning and moving ahead the global conservation agenda! Your inputs are appreciated!
