Commonland: 4 returns from landscape restoration
Commonland was founded in 2013 by the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management, the Rotterdam School of Management – Erasmus University (http://www.rsm.nl/home/) and the COmON Foundation (http://www.comonstichting.org/en/). It has developed a 4 returns / 3 zones / 20 years approach to actively involve companies and investors in large scale ecosystem restoration based on 4 returns: return of inspiration, return of social capital, return of natural capital and return of financial capital.
Commonland’s strategy is:
- develop the 4 returns approach into a practical system thinking approach for landscape restoration understandable for all stakeholders;
- orchestrate and participate in the development of restoration landscapes that are scalable and replicable, and identify a pipeline of restoration ventures;
- develop an investment fund that enables co-investments in those restoration landscapes and ventures;
- start an educational centre at business school level for managers that think and act in terms of 4 returns and sustainable economic landscape development.
Commonland works in close cooperation with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (http://www.wbcsd.org), the Economics of Land Degradation (http://eld-initiative.org), Wageningen University (https://www.wageningenur.nl/en.htm) and is member of the Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration (http://www.forestlandscaperestoration.org) to contribute to the Bonn Challenge (http://www.bonnchallenge.org/content/challenge).
