Commonland: 4 returns from landscape restoration

Commonland was founded in 2013 by the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management, the Rotterdam School of Management – Erasmus University ( and the COmON Foundation ( It has developed a 4 returns / 3 zones / 20 years approach to actively involve companies and investors in large scale ecosystem restoration based on 4 returns: return of inspiration, return of social capital, return of natural capital and return of financial capital.

 Commonland’s strategy is:

  • develop the 4 returns approach into a practical system thinking approach for landscape restoration understandable for all stakeholders;
  • orchestrate and participate in the development of restoration landscapes that are scalable and replicable, and identify a pipeline of restoration ventures;
  • develop an investment fund that enables co-investments in those restoration landscapes and ventures;
  • start an educational centre at business school level for managers that think and act in terms of 4 returns and sustainable economic landscape development.

Commonland works in close cooperation with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (, the Economics of Land Degradation (, Wageningen University ( and is member of the Global  Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration ( to contribute to the Bonn Challenge (
