One of the key objectives of the forthcoming CBD/COP10 is the review of the CBD/POWPA from which it is expected that a renewed mandate for strengthening the implementation of POWPA will be adopted by the parties.

The Bonn CBD Conference of the Parties to IUCN (para A 24 of decision IX/18,) invited IUCN-WCPA to further contribute to the strengthening of capacity for the implementation of the programme of work on protected areas and the process of its review leading to the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention. Accordingly, an International Workshop on the Future of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas is to be held in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, 14-17 September 2009.

This by-invitation only workshop is jointly organized by IUCN/WCPA, the CBD Secretariat and the Ministry of Environment, Korea and Korea National Parks Service (KNPS) and includes the support of Environment Canada, Conservation International, Lifeweb - Spain, The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture Nature and Food Quality, The Finnish Ministry of the Environment, Parks Canada and UNEP.

The goal of this international meeting is to review the CBD/POWPA as to enhance its effective contribution to achieve the CBD Goals in relation to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. Key objectives of the meeting are to:

  • Assess key lessons learned on the implementation of the CBD/POWPA – successes and pitfalls
  • Identify ways and means and practical actions required at regional, sub-regional and national levels to further enhance its scope and implementation including implementation of COP 9 decision on protected areas.
  • Consider key emerging issues – such as those associated to climate change, and other important issues such as management effectiveness, programme element 2 of PoWPA and restoration issues - that need to be further expanded or included in the POWPA or in the COP X decision.
  • Agree on a strategy on how to promote a renewed mandate for an enhanced CBD/POWPA to be adopted by the parties of the CBD at CBD/COP10.

Attendees (up to 100) will be determined by a small steering committee composed of IUCN WCPA, CBD Secretariat and Donors. The intent is to have a good mix of IUCN WCPA technical experts, CBD POWPA Focal Points, and Donors. The CBD Secretariat has a key role in an advisory and party coordinating capacity. The Workshop will run for three days plus a field excursion day.
