MESSAGE FROM THE MEMBERSHIP UNIT

IUCN welcomes 24 new Members and 3 National Committees
On 25 May 2011, the 76th Meeting of the IUCN Council admitted 24 new Members to IUCN and officially recognized 3 National Committees from the Dominican Republic, the Republic of Congo and Thailand. The Council, President, Director General and entire family of IUCN extend a very warm welcome to the new Members and look forward to their active involvement.
IUCN Members are encouraged to read the profiles on the newly admitted Members and to work together to achieve common goals, including the implementation of the IUCN Programme.

Council decisions The 76th Meeting of the IUCN Council took place in the IUCN Conservation Centre in Gland, Switzerland, from 22 to 25 May 2011. Important outcomes of the Meeting were, among others: Council's approval of the 2010 IUCN Annual Report together with the 2010 Audited Financial Statements; the initiation of a process to advance a Members' vision for the future governance of IUCN; the approval of The ‘One Programme’ Charter - Working together to maximize Programme results; the identification of gaps in IUCN policy and listing of priority issues for the development of motions involving all parts of the Union; and the admission of 24 new IUCN Members. Council also approved a number of draft amendments of the IUCN Statutes, Regulations and Rules of Procedure of the World Conservation Congress for consultation with IUCN Members, including during the 2011 Regional Conservation Forums. This information has already been sent to Members via email.

REMINDER: Regional Conservation Fora The Regional Conservation Fora, taking place between May-October 2011, will provide Members, Commissions and the Secretariat with an opportunity to meet and prepare for the next World Conservation Congress (Jeju, Republic of Korea, 6-15 September 2012).

Membership Focal Point Training Membership Focal Points from regional offices met with the Membership Unit in Gland from 6-10 June to undertake training on the new information systems that will be used to manage our relations with IUCN Members, National and Regional Committees from July onwards. Training was also received on the new Members' Portal, which will undergo further development in the coming months allowing for greater interaction between components of the Union.
In addition, colleagues discussed ways to strengthen communications and Members' engagement, in particular identifying opportunities at the Regional Conservation Forums and looking ahead to the IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2012. > Membership Focal Points
