Management effectiveness evaluation of 23 Marine protected areas in Thailand
Thailand’s Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MCPAs) are very important assets in terms of biodiversity conservation, economic development and livelihood security. Therefore a well managed, representative MCPA system in Thailand lies at the heart of achieving a balanced and healthy marine and coastal ecosystem as a foundation for sustainable development and livelihood security. In recognition of the need to improve management effectiveness in Thailand’s MCPAs, the Department of National Parks and IUCN are implementing a project called ‘Evaluating and improving the management effectiveness of Thailand’s Marine and Coastal Protected Areas’

Local indigenous and ethnic groups propose watershed rehabilitation measures
On 10 May MWD Thailand brought together 20 women and 20 men from indigenous and ethnic groups from the upper and lower basin of the Maechan River, in northern Thailand to discuss their concerns on water and natural resource management in the Maechan sub-basin.

Thais pay respect to Nature in WWD
The Mekong Water Dialogues in Thailand organized a combined celebration of World Wetlands Day and World Water Day. On 2 April in collaboration with the Livelihoods and Landscapes and poverty reduction project, the community of Mae Salong Nok and partner organizations in the watershed area of Doi Mae Salong, near Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, conducted a special water ceremony to pay their respects to nature and also planted trees within the local forest.

Koh Tao Island preserves paradise by managing waste
Koh Tao in Surat Thani province celebrated “Preserving Paradise: Save Koh Tao Festival” on March 26-26 marking the island’s dedication to protect the sea and island environment. IUCN Thailand, an active partner of MFF, supported the local Green Island Movement’s “Waste Management Exhibition and Practice Demonstration” during the festival. A forum organized by IUCN brought community leaders and members, and government representatives from Koh Tao and Surat Thani province, to discuss waste management initiatives in schools, households, and tourism establishments. The attendees affirmed the need for balance between preserving Koh Tao’s natural environment and developing economic opportunities from tourism and other activities. The island’s Waste Management program allows villagers, tourists, tour operators, and provincial authorities to maintain this balance. …

Thai RBOs assessment discussion
IUCN Thailand held a consultation meeting on 24 March to discuss an assessment of River Basin Organizations (RBOs). It was proposed to use the Chi River Basin as a case study to help understand the situation of RBOs, their strengths and weakness in Khon Kean, the second largest of the north-eastern provinces of Thailand.

Mae Chan River Basin Dialogue
A meeting to facilitate a multi-stakeholder dialogue was held on 20 March. More than 30 representatives attended from the Land Development Office, the Agriculture Office, Non-government organizations and communities along Mae Chan River Basin. The participants shared their knowledge of the water and land use situation for integrated management of the Mae Chan River Basin of the Mekong Catchment in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand. The outcomes of the dialogue have laid foundations for the discussions of water management for Indigenous people, planned in April. …
