Shrimp farming: a case study from Bac Lieu

In Vietnam, shrimp farming is a multi-billion dollar a year export business. But the term encompasses a wide range of farming practices from highly intensive to semi-natural. As sea levels rise and storms intensify, there is an argument that coastal areas in the Mekong Delta should move to a more natural state in which integrated mangrove-shrimp farming is the dominant land use. But that means addressing the polluted water that intensive farms often discharge into integrated mangrove farms. These two farming systems exist side by side. On a recent visit to Bac Lieu, we interviewed integrated mangrove farmers about their business model and the environmental impacts of the nearby intensive farms.
