IUCN has a long history in Viet Nam since it supported the government in the preparation of the first National Conservation Strategy in 1984. Since then, IUCN has made significant contributions to biodiversity conservation and environmental protection, particularly through the development of laws and policies.

IUCN Viet Nam focuses its work on the following thematic programmes: Business and Biodiversity, Forest ConservationProtected Area and World Heritage, Marine and Coastal Ecosystems, Water and Wetlands and Environmental Governance.

Wetlands Workshop Identifies The Need For Improved Environmental Guidance

On September 22-23, 2009, 30 scientists and wetlands managers met at Can Tho University in the heart of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. They discussed the state of the wetlands in the delta and proposed policies that would help sustain the vital ecological services provided by wetlands and mitigate the effects of climate change on the region. The participants came from the delta’s leading universities and research centers, government agencies, NGOs, and management boards of wetland protected areas.

If a tree is cut down illegally, but no one knows the law, did it make a sound? Riddle aside, the IUCN Vietnam is attempting to address that exact problem. In 2008, The European Union created a FLEGT action plan as a way to cut down on illegal logging. However, in Vietnam, there is a lack of understanding and awareness of the FLEGT action plan. The IUCN Vietnam has been working hard to raise awareness and increase the legality of FLEGT. …

Bringing Together Communication and Conservation: A Journalist at IUCN Vietnam

IUCN Viet Nam has been building its communications program over the past several years by launching a web site, issuing increasing numbers of reports and information sheets, and reaching out to the media and other partners in conservation. I was honored to become a part of that process when I joined the IUCN VN office as a communications officer with funding from the Princeton in Asia program in the United States.

Ever been to a waste fashion show? On July 18 community members in Binh An commune, Thanh My Loi ward, and Phu My town (near HCMC) got to show off some creative outfits at the closing ceremonies of a month-long waste reduction campaign sponsored by IUCN VN and Holcim Vietnam Ltd.
