IUCN Asia’s Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Programme works with members and partners by infusing environmental safeguards into mainstream disaster risk reduction programmes and by integrating disaster risk reduction aspects into conservation and sustainable development programming. We achieve our goals through policy analysis, advocacy, capacity building and knowledge sharing. Since the 2004 tsunami, we have worked with mainstream aid agencies, development organizations and conservation groups in order to achieve ecosystem and human well-being.
We strive to:
- Work together for sustainable human well-being through environmentally sensitive disaster risk reduction programming
- Use policy analysis, advocacy, capacity building and knowledge sharing as tools in achieving our programmatic goals
- Provide future relevant conservation and development tools by analyzing lessons learned
Since the 2004 tsunami, our interventions have evolved from emergency response and rapid environmental assessments to disaster risk reduction programming. Based on lessons learned, we developed a manual detailing ecosystem linkage with human well-being that presents approaches to integrate environment into disaster risk reduction and provides relevant tools. Along side it, we have developed a training module intended to be location flexible. This educational tool is tailored to the needs of target organizations and arranged training programmes for a number of diverse organizations in Asia.
