CEC Steering Committee Annual Meeting: Look to the future
01 March 2012 | Article
The Members of the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) Steering Committee gathered in Hungary to look to the future and begin to craft out a strategic plan which will help guide the CEC into the next IUCN Global Programme and beyond to 2020. The meeting was hosted by CEC Regional Vice-Chair for Europe, Katalin Czippán and the Göncöl Foundation in the leafy city of Vác, Hungary from 16 to 18 October 2011.
The meeting was a rare and valuable opportunity to meet face-to-face. Guests included WCPA Chair Nick Lopoukhine, IUCN Councillor Vilmos Kiszel, and IUCN Global Communications Director John Kidd. The agenda was packed and no time wasted as the team worked with reviewing the various inputs from CEC members, external situation analysis and requests from other IUCN programmes.
The meeting covered a range of critical topics including the strategic plan for CEC, selecting the proposed shortlist candidates to nominate to the Council for the next CEC Chair, plans for the next World Conservation Congress and the multitude of requests made of CEC, general IUCN governance issues and potential partnerships with other institutions that can complement the work of CEC. The CEC Strategic Plan 2013-2016 will be posted in the CEC webpage soon.
There was also the opportunity to explore some of Hungary and the communities along the Danube River and enjoy Hungarian hospitality. This was an important gathering for CEC and helped lay the foundation for setting clear objectives and coordinating CEC’s engagement in some upcoming events. The team have continued to follow up on the meeting and are drafting the CEC Strategic Plan which will present many opportunities for CEC members to engage.
