The Woman’s Society of Librazhd has been granted a small project by the Lynx Recovery Program Phase II, micro projects component, to increase the role of women in the promotion, conservation and enhancement of values in Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park.
The Society has selected 45 women from six Communities including Stebleva, Letmi, Librazhd Qender, Hotolishta, Qukes and Rajca, to receive specific training and organize a small fair dedicated to local food and traditional costumes on 15th December in Librazhd.
The principal aims of the micro project are:
- To establish a stronger and more sustainable local economy founded on local markets where the role of woman is significantly increased.
- To provide employment and training opportunities for local people and reduce impacts on the ecosystems of Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park.
- To create ways of conserving the landscapes and ecosystems of Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park.
- To design a concept for sustaining services used by local people.
The basis of the micro project is to encourage a more sustainable use of land by promoting environmentally friendly farming methods and linking the production of food, traditions and human attitudes to the landscapes of Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park.
Generally, there is very little knowledge of the potential for tourism development centered on local foods and traditions and the status of incomes generated through these types of activities are very limited. The current economy of the National Park relies heavily on agriculture and livestock.
Tourism development that leads to job creation and includes food retail and production and the creation of value-added products as well as ensures that more money is kept in the local economy will help ensure the long-term health of the local rural economies.
The project participants held an event in December of 2011 showcasing their activities which was visited by hundreds of local residents from Librazhd and the surrounding communities of Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park. Attendees included Prefect of Elbasan, Head of Communities, teachers and other interested people. The event was presented in the local and central media.
