Three North African natural World Heritage sites assessed as ‘under concern’ by last IUCN report

TABE’A II report is an update of the 2011 TABE’A report prepared by the TABEA Programme. Its main objective is to assist state parties in the Arab Region to enhance their performance in the World Heritage convention (1972). TABE'A II is tracking the conservation status of natural World Heritage sites in the Arab region and has recently been released in the 39th World Heritage Committee meeting in Bonn, Germany. It is noteworthy to mention that the first TABE’A report was a pilot report of IUCN Conservation outlook assessment. Since the first report, the recent conservation outlook assessments have more information; therefore the resulting assessments are more accurate. This report included an update of the conservation status of all natural and mixed world heritage sites in the Arab Region, from which three are located in North Africa: Ichkeul National Park (Tunisia) and Tassili n’Ajjer National Park (Algeria) exhibit some concern in regard to conservation status, while the conservation outlook of Wadi Al-Hilan (whale Valley, Egypt) is good.  …

Spain renews support to IUCN in the Mediterranean

 The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA) together with the Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and the Andalusian regional government (CMAOT) in Spain have renewed their commitment to support the activities of the Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN-Med). The new addendum signed by the four parties will extend the General Protocol of Cooperation initially formalized in 2010, whose objective is to promote conservation and sustainable development of the Mediterranean hotspot.  | Spanish

IUCN welcomes three new members in the Mediterranean region

The IUCN Council has just validated the decision taken by its Bureau, on 29 June 2015, to approve the admission of 16 new Members. Three of them belong to the Mediterranean region and are: the Association for the Development of Rural Capacities, the Italian Zoological Union and the Action for Wildlife.
