The UNCLOS defines the Area as "the seabed and ocean floor and subsoil thereof, beyond the limits of the national jurisdiction" [1]. In the Mediterranean, as the distance between the baselines of States opposite each other is everywhere less than 400 nautical miles (cf. Continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone), there is no seabed governed by the legal regime of the Area.
