The "Barcelona system" refers to eight instruments in all, currently all in force. Thus, in addition to the framework Convention, now known as the "Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean", seven technical protocols were adopted by the Contracting Parties [1].
