Project Title: Renewable Energy Projects
Project Location: Wind component: all 6 provinces; Hydro component: Talise River, Maewo Island; Solar component: Santo and Malekula Islands
Project Duration: 1 year ending 2010
Project Cost: USD 1million
Project Summary:
Focuses on expanding the use of locally available renewable energy resources. There are three components to the project: wind monitoring and related technical assistance in all 6 provinces of the country; rehabilitation of Vanuatu solar PV systems on the island of Santo and Malekula; and the development of the Talise mini-hydro scheme to serve 3 communities on the island of Maewo in the Penama Province. The project is being coordinated by the Energy Unit and projected savings from the project is estimated to be USD $5,000 on fuel costs and 118 tonnes of CO2 emission annually.
Project Development:
Recruitment of a project coordinator is underway. The review of data for Talise Hydro was tendered out and awarded to GHD International, a company that specialises in project development and management particularly in the Pacific. A preliminary report based on a desk evaluation of the original feasibility study has been produced. The review work is funded by PIGGAREP. Scoping missions to identify sites for installing wind monitoring equipments have been undertaken in June and completed in four provinces: Torba, Malampa, Sanma and Penama. The scoping mission for Shefa and Tafea provinces are expected to begin soon. Scoping mission for the solar rehabilitation project in Santo and Malekula provinces is to begin in September.
