• Livelihoods and Landscapes will nationally, scale-up and intensify tripartite action3 on Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG), particularly in support of the Voluntary Partnership Agreement with the European Union.  Support related pilot field activities in order to establish a real-time learning link between political dialogue and on-the-ground effectiveness / realities. 
  • In collaboration with Unilever, ICRAF, SNV, the Forest Research Institute in Ghana (FORIG) and local NGOs, build on initial on-going pilot activities to ensure sustainable and equitable institutional and market arrangements that benefit the rural poor are mainstreamed into the wild-harvesting, on-farm production and trade in Allanblackia nuts. Pilot the extension of these lessons to Liberia
  • With support from members of the Global Partnership for Forest Landscape Restoration (FORIG, ITTO, Tropenbos), the Forestry Commission and local NGOs, and in close coordination with the DGIS-funded Ghana Wildfire Project,  add technical value to ongoing initiatives and Government priorities, with particular emphasis on attaining necessary institutional and policy arrangements to support the implementation of locally negotiated strategic outcomes that pertain to wildfire management
  • In collaboration with Tropenbos, FORIG, the University of Ghana, Conservation International and the Ministry of Lands, Forests and Mines, and in close liaison with the Ghana Statistical Service, establish social and biological baselines to measure progress on both locally negotiated and MDG-related outcomes
  • Where necessary and as requested by in-country partners, help ensure that activities above are in alignment with national priorities and consistent with the Development Partners Performance Assessment Framework in Ghana and its equivalent in Liberia
  • In collaboration with PROFOR and WWF, pilot and refine landscape level negotiation support and prioritization tools, including the development of specific scenarios particularly with respect to enhancing community-based natural resource management via existing local institutions such as Community Forest Committees and Community Resource Management Areas
  • In Liberia, support a review of land tenure arrangements to help ensure that reforms in the forest and land use sectors are responsive to the legal and actual tenure arrangements in forest lands
  • Work to help build the capacity of local NGOs and community organizations to more effectively engage in the delivery of national priorities, with particular reference to the ongoing process of forest sector reform, and explore and help develop innovative mechanism to channel “seed” resources to these actors
  • In co-ordination with the Liberia Forest Initiative and the Liberian Sustainable Development Institute (SDI), currently working with IUCN on AFLEG, produce materials and organize capacity building activities to lay a basic foundation of knowledge on forest governance issues, particularly as they pertain to community rights and poverty reduction (including, as appropriate, exchange visits to Ghana) 
  • Working with members of the Liberian Forest Initiative and local NGOs, support efforts to promote sustainable forest management and community forest management in Liberia.
