Open-minded approach to the inclusion of civil society in IPBES
07 October 2011 | News story
On behalf of non-governmental stakeholders who have expressed their interest in the First Plenary Session to Build IPBES, IUCN has reiterated its suggestion that the operational and governance structures of IPBES should be set up in such a way to encourage optimum, effective and efficient involvement of all relevant stakeholders who are practically or potentially providers and/or beneficiaries of information of relevance to the platform.
Several members of civil society and the scientific community attending this session have expressed their willingness to get organized and to coordinate their involvement and participation in the work of IPBES.
The coordination of the inputs of these stakeholders can be done through the mechanism to be established by the Plenary to ensure an active and efficient participation which has been included in the paper under consideration, and IUCN with these stakeholdes look forward to contributing to defining it.
