Dear Fellow Member of IUCN,
Your vote and our joint work building on WCPA-IUCN tradition could make 2012-2016 the most dynamic and fruitful period ever. No prescriptions; rather let’s plan our role and best paths to global protected areas and biodiversity conservation immediately following the elections.
Ten amongst many crucial reasons uniquely qualify me to your well reasoned choice for WCPA Chair:
- Passionate about supporting, mainstreaming and achieving the Global Protected Areas Programme, Aichi Targets and ONE-IUCN.
- Ample record of accomplishments in academia, government and civil society.
- Prepared, able and enthusiastic to devote full-time some of my best and most productive years.
- “Builder” of institutions still working for conservation.
- Modern, collaborative, multicultural and interdisciplinary approach.
- Ability to lead or follow; adapt, innovate or consolidate according to the mission’s needs.
- Thirty years working with indigenous, rural and fisherman communities in PAs and wilderness.
- Refreshing developing nation perspectives aided by a variety of experiences.
- Science and traditional knowledge as basis for conservation actions.
- Pragmatic yet principled approach empowering stakeholders in diverse governance models.
Please e-mail your concerns or ideas to better serve this vital Commission: enkerlin@gmail.com
Many thanks for your support!

Thanks for your very important comment. I will try to be with you at the workshop.
As yoou know under Nik Lopoukhine leadership WCPA improved in the incorporation of youth. We need to continue and expand on such efforts.
If elected I will launch a crusade for an expansion of our membership base including a special program for increasing youth participation through a "mentorship" with other members and other mechanisms.
I am VERY interested in your proposals.
Kind regards

Many IUCN Member Organizations are interested in engaging youth and collaborating across generations to help achieve conservation outcomes - for example the 35 co-sponsors of Motions 008 and 132. If you are elected to Council, how do you propose to promote youth engagement and intergenerational partnership? How can we bring more young conservationists into the Union and reach out to the significant global youth demographic? Please share your action ideas here; we also invite you join our workshop on developing an IUCN-wide Action Plan on this topic on 11 Sept, 11-13h, Room 203. Thank you!

Many thanks Peter. Those were exciting times with the assistance of very many people and a lot of enthusiasm and momentum were built. I am pleased to say that it has continued and Mexico continues to "deliver" on wetlands conservation.
As we have discussed more work is needed to better integrate the conventions for enhanced conservation within PAs and in general. We should assist members to become leaders in that.

Enersto, as the person who led the advancement in nomination of Ramsar sites in Mexico, showing the world how increasing both numbers of sites but importantly their quality can have governments focus on the wider issues of sustainability i think you would be able to contribute enormously to dragging WCPA into the C21st. Certainly the challanges of keeping protecetd areas relavnt to conservation, and peoples livelihoods, in a time of ever more rapid environmental change, are ones you appreciate. Alas, i cannot be in jeju, but wish you all success!

The World Parks Congress will again be a defining moment for conservation and with that for life on Earth. We as WCPA, GPAP and IUCN as a whole must rise to this challenge. It is about the future in a rapidly changing world. It is about modern and adaptive conservation. As expressed in the documents in the Congress Webpage on elections of the WCPA Chair you can see that my experience and track record are very well suited to lead in this collective challenge.

Thanks for your comment and insigth.
The notion of supporting PA staff as "centre of our effort" should be read in terms of having better PA professionals and amogst one of the most important is precisely developing abilities and attitudes to effectively deal with conflict and to better interact with communities. In some innovative arrangements that need to be further promoted the communities themselves are the "staff" because they manage their own lands and significantly contribute to conservation.
Kind regards, EEH

Felcidades Ernesto en esta nueva empresa en la que espero resultes elegido para el bien de la región y de la CMAP. Hace tiempo que ya no estoy ligada a una organización de conservación, pero sigo atenta a todas las noticias de la Comisión. Mucha suerte!
