Eight new natural sites have been added to the World Heritage List, following IUCN’s recommendations.The new sites include the Socotra Archipelago in Yemen, Canada’s Joggins Fossil Cliffs, the French Lagoons of New Caledonia, Saryarka in Northern Kazakhstan, Mount Sanqingshan National Park in China, Surtsey in Iceland, the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona, and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico.

More than a quarter of natural World Heritage sites are under pressure by existing or future mineral extraction. For this reason, IUCN is calling on the private sector, state-run companies and governments themselves to adopt and enforce the “no go” principle, meaning that no mining and/or mineral and oil exploration and production can be carried out in World Heritage sites. The call was made today in Québec City, Canada, during the 32nd session of the World Heritage Committee.

World Heritage sites will be under the spotlight next month as the World Heritage Committee prepares to meet in Quebec City, Canada, from July 2-10. They will discuss sites that should be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as existing World Heritage sites that are threatened.
