IUCN Global Protected Area Programme Staff
Trevor Sandwith
Head, Global Protected Areas Programme
Trevor leads IUCN’s Global Programme on Protected Areas which consists of a small secretariat staff based in headquarters in Switzerland, and in an extensive distributed staff located in all of IUCN’s regional offices around the world. His role includes co-ordinating IUCN’s work to conserve biodiversity and ensure its sustainable and equitable use through mainstreaming protected areas as an effective institutional model. In particular, it involves promoting political commitment and public funding to regional and national efforts to establish representative systems of protected areas, that are effectively managed, equitably governed and sustainably financed. It includes raising awareness and communicating the value of protected areas as natural solutions to society’s major challenges, including addressing basic human needs for food and water, and as part of the “green infrastructure” for disaster risk reduction and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Trevor acts as the focal point for the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, and for the alignment of its task forces and specialist groups in pursuit of IUCN vision and mission in the many ways in which protected areas play significant roles. It also entails a focus on key development areas for protected areas research, policy and practice, including but not limited to the economics and sustainable financing of protected areas, the recognition of the full suite of management categories and governance arrangements for protected areas, management standards and capacity development, as well as relevance to sectors including health, water, climate, food and water security. A major responsibility, working across the IUCN programme including its specialist commissions, is the planning and management of the 2014 IUCN World Parks Congress, a 10 yearly event that seeks transformative change in the way in which protected areas make their contribution to biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
