IUCN welcomes fishing closures in Pacific high seas pockets

IUCN welcomes the decision by Western Pacific island nations to close an area three times the size of California to fishing activity, effectively creating the world's largest no-take zone.  The decision was reached in order to protect one of the world's last great tuna stocks. The fishing effort in the economic exclusion zones (EEZs) around the islands, mainly carried out by foreign fleets that pay the island states for the right to fish, will continue at a unsustainable rate, however, according to IUCN. …

In line with the IUCN mandate to help the world find pragmatic solutions to our most pressing environment and development challenges, IUCN and Inwent honoured the Syrian Arab Republic for presenting the best case study on environmental awareness focusing on water scarcity. Six case studies were presented from Jordan, Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine in addition to Syria. This award was part of a 5-day-training workshop entitled How to Design & Implement Public Awareness Campaigns organized by IUCN Regional Water Resources & Drylands Programme (REWARD) and Inwent Capacity Building International during May 31 – June 5, 2009 in Jordan. …
