Climate action needed now - talks continue

UNFCCC talks, 31 May – 11 June 2010, Bonn                                Negotiations at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meeting resume in Bonn, continuing efforts to establish a post-2012 global climate change regime. Following disappointment in Copenhagen, the timing for the adoption of a new legally binding agreement remains unclear, but Parties should aim at an agreement on the building blocks of a new regime for the next UNFCCC Summit in Cancun, Mexico, in November this year.

Wetland aliens cause bird extinction

BirdLife International announces today, in an update to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ for birds, the extinction of Alaotra Grebe Tachybaptus rufolavatus. Restricted to a tiny area of east Madagascar, this species declined rapidly after carnivorous fish were introduced to the lakes in which it lived. This, along with the use of nylon gill-nets by fisherman which caught and drowned birds, has driven this species into the abyss.   …

On May 15, 2010, the Armenian Society for the Protection of Birds (IUCN member and BirdLife in Armenia) organized the “Crane – Bird of Peace Festival” in the village of Mets Sepasar, Shirak province. The Festival celebrated one of Armenia’s critically endangered and red listed species, the Common Crane.
