Project Coordinator : Samuel Kofi Nyame
Location : Ghana
Perspective : Second (II) Project Phase to begin soon

Project objective :
The overall objective of the project is to contribute towards the sustainable development and trade of Allanblackia nuts. This will promote national economic development by diversifying income sources, improving livelihoods and fostering sustainable tropical forest management in Ghana.
Target project communities (beneficiaries):
Mpataho, Kwafokrom, Berekum, Simpa, and Mmerewa

Project mandate (Outcomes)
The project seeks to achieve five main results namely:

  • Best-practice guidelines for Allanblackia harvesting to be adopted by industry and collectors;
  • Biological and socioeconomic baselines to be established;
  • Institutional and legal aspects regarding Allanblackia harvesting to be clarified;
  • Allanblackia supply chain is environmentally sustainable, socially equitable, economically viable;
  • Primary producers to be trained and know good practice harvesting methods.

Project Description : Allanblackia paviflora is an evergreen tree species found close to the equator in the humid tropical forests of West, Central and East Africa. Allanblackia oil, extracted from the seeds of the tree, is a new commodity with the ability to replace palm oil in some edible foods such as margarine including inedible products such as soaps and detergents. This project seeks to establish structures that would ensure that the Allanblackia supply chain is managed in a sustainable manner while ensuring that local partners develop the capacity to take over the supply chain as external partners gradually withdraw.

Project organization and implementation structure : The following chart depicts the organizational structure and relationship between the different project partners. Partners in the green frames are financial, and are represented at the global and field levels. Partners in the blue frames are involved in project execution, represented at the global/regional levels (supervision) and the field levels (implementation). The partner in the red frame i.e. Unilever plays an advisory role with some field activities. Unilever is expected to benefit from some key outputs of this project.
