There are currently more than 90 species of reptiles and amphibians for which trade is forbidden under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species or CITES, as the species are threatened with extinction. For more than 600, trade is controlled to avoid threats to their survival.
Peter Paul van Dijk, deputy chair of the IUCN/SSC Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles Specialist group, explains the threats which tortoises and freshwater turtles in particular currently face.
