On March 28-April 1, 2015, the National Assembly (NA) will host the 132rd Assembly of the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union: http://www.ipu.org/conf-e/132agnd.htm. On the agenda is a resolution on “Shaping a new system of water governance: Promoting parliamentary action on water”. In preparation, the NA organized a workshop in December, chaired by the NA Vice-President, to share ideas on water governance in Vietnam. The presentations on domestic and international water governance and plenary discussion raised some interesting issues. …

Inspiring conservation of Saola and other endemic species in Lao PDR

The Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensisis) is probably the most endangered large mammal in the Indo-Burma region. For success in Saola conservation, immediate site-based actions are required to prevent rapid extinction, as well as longer-term initiatives to ensure the species’ survival in perpetuity. Seeking to meet these goals, this project is being implemented by King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in the newly-designated Phou Sithon Endangered Species Conservation Area, Bolikhamxay Province, Lao PDR (one of the only protected areas in the Key Biodiversity Area "Eastern Bolikhamxay Mountains", covering 14,200 ha of evergreen forest), with funding from a Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF)/IUCN small grant.  …
