Seychelles success story

This week BirdLife International and Nature Seychelles (BirdLife in Seychelles) are celebrating the anniversary of one the world’s greatest conservation success stories. In 1968, Cousin Island was purchased by the International Council of Bird Preservation (ICBP now BirdLife International) to save the last remaining population of Seychelles Warbler Acrocephalus sechellensis from extinction. Forty years on, warbler numbers have risen by 300%, and the island has been transformed from a coconut plantation to a profitable Nature Reserve which greatly benefits local people and global biodiversity.

President Bush today will formally designate three areas in the Pacific as Marine National Monuments. IUCN has been one of the major partners of the U.S. Government in the creation of these marine protected areas. The scientific and technical advice provided by IUCN to the President’s Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) has paid off, as it will result in the creation of the world’s largest ocean protected area covering 195,280 square miles. …

La asesoría técnica y científica brindada por la UICN al Presidente del Consejo de Calidad Ambiental (CEQ por sus siglas en inglés) ha dado como resultado la creación de la mayor área protegida en el océano con una cobertura de 195,280 millas cuadradas (505,775 km2)
