AED Questionnaire - Instructions for editing maps electronically

This page describes how to make graphic markups to the elephant range in the African Elephant Database Questionnaire, downloadable from here.

  1. You must have Adobe Reader 7.0 or later in order to be able to edit the maps electronically.
  2. Download the map you want to edit from the AED Questionnaire page.
  3. The map needs to open in Adobe Reader, not within your browser. If it does open in your browser, click on the “Save a copy button” and save the map to a folder in your computer (see graphic below) and then open the file in Adobe Reader 7.0 or later (or Adobe Acrobat 6.0 or later).

    save a copy in Acrobat

  4. On the toolbar along the top of the window, you will see a button labelled “Comment & Markup” (see below). Press the little black arrow next to it and “show drawing markup toolbar”

    Acrobat Reader commenting tools

  5. From the newly opened drawing markup toolbars, you can choose various tools such as the polygon tool, the pencil tool, etc, and use them to draw on top of the map. You can add text comments to each drawing edit you make.
  6. If you make mistakes, you can select them with the cursor and delete them. Once you’ve finished making comments, on the Menu, select Document > Comments > Export Comments.
  7. Save the comments as a file in your computer by selecting from the Menu Document > Comments > Export Comments... (the exported comments file will have the extension “fdf”).
  8. Send the fdf file containing the edits, along with the completed questionnaire, as email attachments to the address shown on the questionnaire.

Thank you for helping us keep the AED up to date!!
