The Medicinal Plant Specialist Group (MPSG) is a global network of experts contributing within their own institutions and in their own regions to the conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants. The MPSG was founded in 1994, under the auspices of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the IUCN - the World Conservation Union, to increase global awareness of conservation threats to medicinal plants, and to promote sustainable use and conservation action.
IUCN - The World Conservation Union
IUCN-The World Conservation Union is the world’s largest and most important conservation network. The Union brings together 82 States, 111 government agencies, more than 800 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership. The Union's mission is to influence, encourage, and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. The IUCN Species Survival Commission
The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) is a science-based network of some 7,000 volunteer experts from almost every country of the world, all working together towards achieving the vision of "A world that values and conserves present levels of biodiversity." The Medicinal Plant Specialist Group is one of more than 100 Specialist Groups and Task Forces that make up the SSC. These expert networks work on particular groups of plants and animals that are threatened with extinction or are of special importance to human welfare. A few of these groups, such as the MPSG, deal with issues that cut across taxonomic and bioregional divisions. SSC serves the Union, its members, and the IUCN programme by providing advice on technical aspects of species conservation. Learn more about IUCN SSC
TRAFFIC – The Wildlife Trade Monitoring Network
TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature. TRAFFIC is a joint programme of WWF and IUCN - The World Conservation Union. The Medicinal Plant Specialist Group works with TRAFFIC on medicinal plants in trade, contributing to TRAFFIC's vision of a world in which trade in wild plants and animals will be managed at sustainable levels without damaging the integrity of ecological systems and in such a manner that it makes a significant contribution to human needs, supports local and national economies and helps to motivate commitments to the conservation of wild species and their habitats.
