Vth IUCN WORLD PARKS CONGRESS SETS AGENDA FOR NEXT DECADE, SPURS CONSERVATION INITIATIVES FOR AFRICA

Durban, South Africa, 17 September 2003 (IUCN) - The Vth IUCN World Parks Congress was held from 8 to 17 September 2003 in Durban, South Africa with participants agreed on new commitments and policy guidance for protected areas worldwide. In closing the Congress, Achim Steiner, Director General of IUCN - The World Conservation Union, noted that: “Tomorrow 3000 delegates will return to their home countries armed with the Durban Accord, Action Plan and Recommendations, as well as new knowledge and contacts. For the past ten days, parks were centre stage and at the front of people’s minds, and we hope they will remain so beyond Durban,”. The Closing Plenary of the Congress delivered the Durban Accord – a succinct statement for the future of protected areas, an Action Plan; a set of 32 specific Recommendations; and a message to next year’s meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity. A number of initiatives were announced, pledging funding, political support and technical input to improve the management of this 100,000 sites-strong estate. (...)

V CONGRESO MUNDIAL DE PARQUES DEFINE AGENDA PARA LA SIGUIENTE DÉCADA, INCENTIVANDO LAS INICIATIVAS DE CONSERVACIÓN DE ÁFRICA

Durban, Africa del Sur, 17 de Septiembre 2003 (UICN) - El Quinto Congreso Mundial de Parques que tuvo lugar en Durban, Sudáfrica, del 8 al 17 de septiembre 2003 finalizó con el acuerdo común de los participantes acerca de los nuevos compromisos y la orientación política para las áreas protegidas en todo el mundo. Achim Steiner, Director General de la Unión mundial para la naturaleza - UICN, declaró : “Mañana tres mil delegados regresarán a sus países de origen armados con el Acuerdo de Durban, el Plan de Acción y la lista de Recomendaciones, así como con nuevos conocimientos y contactos. Durante los últimos diez días, los parques fueron el centro de atención de quienes participaron durante el Congreso y esperamos que lo continuen siendo más allá de Durban” . El Plenario Final del Congreso produjo el Acuerdo de Durban, una concisa declaración acerca del futuro de las áreas protegidas, un Plan de Acción, una lista de 32 recomendaciones específicas y un mensaje para la próxima Reunión de las Partes de la Convención sobre la Biodiversidad, en 2004. Varias iniciativas fueron anunciadas, debatiendo asuntos de financiamiento, apoyo político y consideraciones técnicas para mejorar el manejo de estos 100,000 sitios de gran importancia. (...)

LE Ve CONGRÈS MONDIAL SUR LES PARCS DE L’UICN FIXE LE PROGRAMME POUR LES 10 PROCHAINES ANNÉES, ET ENCOURAGE À DE NOUVELLES INITIATIVES DE CONSERVATION POUR L’AFRIQUE

Durban, Afrique du Sud, 17 Sepiembre 2003 (UICN) - Le Ve Congrès mondial sur les parcs de l’UICN, qui a eu lieu à Durban en Afrique du Sud, du 8 au 17 septembre 2003 s'est terminé avec un accord des participants sur de nouveaux engagements et des orientations politiques pour les aires protégées dans le monde. Achim Steiner, Directeur Général de l'Union mondiale pour la nature - UICN a declaré: «Demain 3000 délégués rentreront chez eux armés de l’Accord de Durban, du Plan d’action et des recommandations, de nouvelles connaissances et de nouveaux contacts. Pendant les dix derniers jours, les parcs ont été au centre de l’attention et présent dans l’esprit des gens et nous espérons que cela continuera après Durban ». Le séance de clôture du congrés a présenté l’Accord de Durban, une brève déclaration sur le futur des aires protégées, un Plan d’action, une série de recommandations et un message adressé à la réunion de la Convention sur la diversité biologique qui se tiendra l’année prochaine. De nombreuses initiatives ont annoncées, engageant des financements, un soutien politique et technique pour améliorer la gestion de ces quelques 100.000 sites. (...)

GRAN PREMIER AT THE CONGRESS

Photo: IUCNDurban, South Africa, 17 September 2003 (IUCN) - One day before the closing ceremony of the World Parks Congress (WPC) at Durban, a joint meeting hosted by World Commission Protected Areas (WCPA)- Europe, the IUCN Mediterranean Centre and WCPA West Asia, Middle East and North Africa convened European, Mediterranean and North African participants to share their views on the congress outputs. Four councillors, Mr Z. Sekkal, Mrs P. Canals, Mr. I. Voluskok, Mrs. A. Kalinowska, along with Mr. M.Sulayem, Vicechairman WCPA North Africa and Middle East and Mr. R. Croft, Vicechairman of WCPA Europe, facilitate the debate by giving the floor to the delegates. Roger Croft mentioned the 10 actions adopted by the international community at the WPC through the Durban Action Plan and the need to bring this output into the respective regions to make more effective the conservation and take forward innovative actions.
