| Building on the
2002 International Year of the Mountain the Congress will deal
with mountain protected areas through a pre-Congress Workshop,
5-8 September, 2003 in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage
Site. The field based workshop will cover a range relevant issues
for mountain protected area systems linked to the Congress themes. |
Larry Hamilton,
the WCPA Mountain Biome Vice-Chair, is leading preparations
for a significant World Heritage Mountain Protected Area Workshop
as a prelude to next year's World Parks Congress.
The field based workshop will take place in the World Heritage
listed uKhahlamba-Drakensberg National Park west of Durban,
South Africa. The pre-congress workshop is scheduled for 4
days from September 5 to 8, 2003 and will cover a range
of relevant issues for mountain protected area systems linked
to the Congress themes.
The issues to be seen in the field will be:
Water, A Major Benefit Beyond Boundaries;
Transboundary Cooperation in Protected
Area Management and Peace Parks;
Working Beyond Boundaries with Neighbors;
Cultural and Sacred Resource Conservation;
Providing for EcoTourism and Mountaineering, and
Managing Impacts;
Fire and Alien Species - Do Boundaries Matter?;
Integrated Development Protected Area Planning.
The workshop will be limited to 40 participants and Larry
is currently calling for nominations from interested people
to attend.
