A Preliminary Inventory of Coastal Wetlands of
Côte d’Ivoire
M. Nicole, M. Egnankou Wadja and M. Schmidt
This coastal wetland inventory of Côte d'Ivoire illustrates
the socio-economic and bio-genetic importance of the wetlands of
the Gulf of Guinea Coast which is home for growing human population.
This work provides a detailed account of the extent of the threats
facing coastal lagoons, swamp and mangrove forests, including the
construction of the trans-African coastal motorway which will open
the way for the mass arrival of farmers, fisherman and wood-collectors.
This inventory also proves that a preliminary assessment of the
status of wetlands can be produced without huge financial resources
and it is therefore a useful model for all those interested in documenting
the extent and socio-economic importance of coastal wetlands in
Africa.
