Wetlands of Tanzania
G.L. Kamukala & S.A. Crafter
Tanzania's numerous and varied national (and international) wetland
resources are beginning to be threatened by over utilisation and
inadequately planned management as well as by a lack of basic information
and public awareness of their values, functions and products. These
developing threats could be lessened by a national programme of
conservation and wise use of wetland resources and by interaction
with neighbouring countries with similar resources and problems.
A National Seminar on the Wetlands of Tanzania was held from 27-29
November 1991 to examine the issues and to develop proposals for
the structure of a national wetlands programme. This meeting was
also designed to raise awareness of government officers and the
public about the importance of Tanzania's wetlands and the need
for their wise use. The Seminar was planned so that its proceedings
and findings could be published in a form that could offer guidance
to future wetland programmes operatives and, at the same time, assemble
contemporary information and development options for the nation's
wetlands.
