IUCN has accepted a proposal from Sakhalin Energy Investment Company (SEIC) and its potential lenders to organize a workshop following-up the report of the Independent Scientific Review Panel. The Panel’s report, released in February, evaluated the potential implications of planned oil and gas developments on the critically endangered Western Gray Whale population. The workshop will provide additional scientific information and clarification to SEIC and their potential lenders as they now make decisions on the Sakhalin II Phase 2 project, with the aim of ensuring the whale population is protected. The workshop will have a technical and scientific focus and will involve specialists from the Independent Scientific Review Panel, SEIC, the potential lenders, environmental NGOs and IUCN.
