Society has so far failed to address the species extinction crisis, habitat loss and ecosystem degradation. With renewed efforts in 2010, the International year of Biodiversity, IUCN is working with its Members, Commissions and partners to ensure sustainable and equitable management of biodiversity from local to global levels in the following areas:
- Expanding and integrating the biodiversity knowledge base and managing this knowledge using state-of the-art information management systems. Through flagship products such as the IUCN Red List, we will work to illustrate the links between human wellbeing, biodiversity and ecosystems.
- Influencing biodiversity policies at global, regional and national levels: There will be a focus on adopting a strategic plan for the Convention on Biological Diversity and ensuring coherence with international targets to reduce biodiversity loss.
- Developing standards for conservation planning outside protected areas on land and at sea.
- Using the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity to improve understanding of the need for biodiversity conservation and to boost action from all sectors of society.
