IUCN led the International Risk Governance Council work on bioenergy and was Chair of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels working group on the Environment, and is currently in the Environmental NGO chamber. Through such roles, IUCN is able to channel relevant expertise and knowledge – from biodiversity, to water flows and environmental law – to the appropriate stakeholders. In conjunction with key partners such as Shell and gender and energy network Energia, IUCN has initiated discussions on often overlooked topics, including managing the risks posed by invasive species and the need for a gender perspective in energy decisions and policies.
Influencing policy
Some examples of our work
Biofuels Policy
Biofuels have been discussed in the context of many different international arenas, including the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). IUCN has provided position papers, based on resolutions 4.082 Sustainable biomass-based energy and 4.083 Industrial agrofuels production to promote biofuel production that is environmentally sustainable, socially equitable and financially viable.
Energy and sustainable development
IUCN engaged at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development to ensure that environmental as well as social implications of energy options are considered in the context of sustainable development. IUCN also supported a side event and workshop led by Energia exploring the gender dimensions of bioenergy.
