West Asia Regional Councillors
Javed Jabbar has an extensive experience as volunteer head of a member organization of IUCN for over 20 years. As a Chairman of the IUCN Pakistan National Committee for 4 years, Jabbar has helped expand IUCN membership and promoted IUCN’s role in this country.
He was a Senator between (1985–91) and acted as a Federal Minister in 3 Cabinets of Pakistan. He has actively supported public policy and programme formulation in environmental fields.
He was recipient of a Gold Medal from the Human Rights Society of Pakistan in May 2008 for promoting environmental security. He has written and produced a new film for international cinema 2008: “Ramchand Pakistani” set in an arid ecosystem which won the International Critics Prize from the International Federation of Film Critics, July 2008.
In 2004, Jabbar was elected as a Regional Councillor for West Asia and a Vice President of IUCN (2005 - 2008).
Ali Darwish, PhD.
Dr Ali Darwish is an Agricultural Engineer by Profession and holds a Ph.D. in Animal Sciences from Germany. He is the founding member of the Green Line Association in Lebanon, an active member of IUCN since 1995.
In 2000, he played a major role in the establishment of an official Lebanon IUCN National Committee which he chaired. He is also a member of the Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP) and the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA).
Dr Darwish has a broad spectrum of competencies from Sustainable Land Management and Organic Farming, to Rural Development and Sustainable Livelihoods to Food and Water Security and Sovereignty issues.
In 2004 in Bangkok, he was elected a one of the three IUCN West Asia Councillors and served on both the Membership and Programme Committees.
For the past 25 years, Mohammad Shahbaz has gained extensive experience in environmental practice, management and policies in Jordan and evolved into a productive role at the international level.
Working at the Jordanian Department of Environment in 1983 enabled him to recognize the national environmental setting. At the Higher Council for Science and technology (HCST) he masterminded the environmental component in the National Science and Technology Policy and Strategy for Jordan. In 1995 he headed the Jordan Badia Research Development Centre (BRDC). In addition, the mentioned became the IUCN National Committee Chair in Jordan since 2000 until now.
