The North America & Caribbean (NA&C) Region is one of 14 regions worldwide for IUCN’s Commission on Ecosystem Management, itself one of six IUCN commissions. The regional structure is designed to facilitate networking by CEM members living in the same region. A global Steering Committee with regional representatives guides the overall direction of the Commission. The NA&C Region includes more than 20 countries and Caribbean island nations where Spanish is not the national language.* Covering a wide range of ecosystems, it includes islands from Hawaii to Martinique, forested mountains from the Canadian Rockies to Appalachia, central plain farmlands, and vast coastal and riverine systems. With a combined population of almost 400 million people, the region incorporates complex climate-related ecosystem management issues from both developed and developing countries. The regional network numbers 150 professionals with expertise in CEM global priorities: disaster risk reduction, ecosystem-based adaptation (related to climate change), the Red List of Ecosystems, resilience, and ecosystem services. Collaboration with IUCN Secretariat
IUCN is a global organization with a Secretariat in Gland, Switzerland. The staff focal point and CEM administrative counterpart is IUCN’s Global Ecosystem Management Programme (EMP) based in Nairobi (Kenya). For CEM’s North America & Caribbean Region, the primary IUCN office is located in Washington DC where several lead Secretariat staff members are based. IUCN also maintains a formally accredited permanent observer mission to the UN in New York. IUCN programs for CEM-NA&C countries in the Caribbean are administered from the IUCN office in Costa Rica. IUCN Councillors from Canada, USA and Grenada represent the region on the IUCN Council, providing overall strategic direction for the Union.
Regional CEM members receive email newsletters every two months from the Regional Chair (Charlotte Moser) which are also posted on the NA&C page on the global CEM website. Members receive periodic announcements from the Regional Membership Coordinator (Brock Blevins). Global newsletters and flash reports are sent regularly from the Commission Chair (Piet Wit), his assistant (Tedros Medhin), and the EMP Membership-Communications officer (Pat Hawes).
To further facilitate exchange among regional CEM members, the NA&C region maintains a LinkedIn professional social network.
*Mexico, Cuba and Dominican Republic are part of CEM’s Mesoamerica Region.
