Workshop - NBSAP

IUCN Hosts a workshop on Food and Nutrition aspects of Biodiversity

On 7 October 2015, food, nutrition and biodiversity experts from around the country met at the Plant Genetic Resource Centre (PGRC) in Gannoruwa, Kandy to discuss linkages between food and nutrition concerns and biodiversity conservation in the context of developing the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). The workshop was jointly organised by the GEF/UNEP/FAO Project on ‘Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition’ (BFN) implemented by PGRC. IUCN Sri Lanka is the main technical partner to the Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment for the formulation of the NBSAP for the country. Consultations with different sector groups is part of the process adopted in NBSAP formulation and food and nutrition is one of the key areas where biodiversity plays a key role. …

Water professionals day - Symposium

Commemorating the 2015 Water Professionals’ Day in Sri Lanka

The Water Professionals’ Day was initiated in 2003 with the objective of promoting water resources research in Sri Lanka by providing a platform for the water professionals and the students to present and discuss their research findings related to water. Reaching its 13th milestone in 2015, the Water Professionals’ Day Symposium – 2015 was held on 1 October at the University of Peradeniya. The event was organized by Cap-Net Lanka, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture and Geo-Informatics Society of Sri Lanka (GISSL). The theme of the symposium was “Water – Food – Ecosystem Nexus” with the aim to increase the understanding of inter-sectoral linkages for sustainable water management. …

Project Launch - Watershed Conservation and Restoration in the Knuckles Conservation Forest

Launch of HSBC funded project: mini-watershed of Puwakpitiya Oya

Funded by HSBC, the ‘Watershed Conservation and Restoration in the Knuckles Conservation Forest and Environmental Protection Area: mini-watershed of Puwakpitiya Oya’ is a three year project implemented by Sri Lanka Business and Biodiversity Platform (SLBBP) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC). IUCN Sri Lanka functions as the technical partner of this project. Between September 21 and 28, BRIDGE organized series of training workshops on international water law and regional cooperation for the Cambodia National Mekong Committee and National Assembly in Phnom Penh, the National Assembly in Hanoi, and Myanmar and Thai government officials and Thai NGOs in Bangkok. IUCN Sri Lanka partnered with ECO-V in “Kolomba Yathra” for climate change (Colombo walk)

The Kolamba Yathra: an Interfaith Journey for Sustainability was a one-day program with youth of diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds walking around the City of Colombo — the commercial capital of Sri Lanka — to create awareness on Climate Change.  Conducted by Eco Friendly Volunteers (ECO-V), the main objective of this year’s Yathra was to raise awareness of climate change issues across the Colombo public, to engage religious and political leadership on climate change action, and most particularly to engage youth in modeling and action for eco-friendly, sustainable methods, climate change education and adaptation, mitigation and biodiversity restoration and conservation efforts.
