IUCN has been involved in the CBD since its drafting and through its further development. IUCN is unique in being a Union of Members, including over 90 States, 124 government agencies and approximately 1000 NGOs. It can thus provide a forum for multi-stakeholder dialogue. IUCN has considerable experience on the ground, thus providing a unique linkage between policy and practice and ensuring that IUCN’s policy advice is informed by actual experience. Further, with 6 Commissions involving some 11,000 scientists and experts, IUCN can draw on sound scientific and technical advice.
