Protected area literature database

The Protected Area Literature Database is an initiative of WCPA’s Science and Management Theme to provide members with regular updates on published literature related to protected area management. Special thanks go to Dao Nguyen for developing the database system and its accompanying manual.

The database contains the citation details of recently published literature of interest to WCPA members. Each record has been classified according to a set of descriptive categories. The search function uses these categories, the author’s key words and words in the title to identify papers on particular topics. So, for example, you can search for papers that are relevant to conservation planning and climate change in marine systems.

You will need Microsoft Access 2010 to use this database. A manual on the database and how to import the regular updates of literature citations is available here. Follow this manual to access and to search the database.

The Access database file here is the initial database with records collected during October. Updates on literature will be provided in an Excel file each month which will be able to be added to the Access database so that a large literature database on protected areas will be built up over time. To add the records from the Excel files that are posted periodically, follow the instructions in the Manual.

Volunteer to assist

WCPA members who are able to volunteer to do the classification of the papers by descriptive category are welcome to assist in this work. It should take about 1-2 hours of your time in a month to help with this work. If you are willing to assist, please contact Marc Hockings, Vice-Chair for Science and Management of Protected Areas at m.hockings@uq.edu.au
