At the 44th Meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum held this September, efforts towards tackling climate change have been given a new lease of life with the adoption of the Majuro Declaration. The agreement underlines the need for urgent action and also aims to help build momentum towards ensuring a “universal, ambitious and legally-binding climate change agreement by 2015”.

The Pacific Islands Forum is a political grouping of 16 independent and self-governing states in the Pacific region and includes as Associate Members the European overseas entities New Caledonia and French Polynesia.

The Majuro Declaration for Climate Leadership is intended to highlight the strong political commitment of Pacific island nations to tackling climate change and is an effort to spark a new wave of climate leadership that accelerates the reduction of greenhouse gases worldwide.

During the conference, the European Commission, the Pacific Community, and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States agreed on the "ACP-EU Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific" programme. The programme will see 20 million Euros provided by the European Commission to support the Pacific states in addressing the impacts of climate change and the urgent need to improve resilience to natural disasters.

Pacific Islands Climate Action Plea
Great idea, Climate Change is real to us. We should be serious enough to move things forward for the betterment towards greater Pacific Islands reselience. I think its great time as we now have the much waited political will to move..thanks to the Majuro Declaration. However, I rather have to challenge how best and effective we can build our resilience towards climate change without funding money...let alone be it, community adaptation measures which we come up with..

lets all move forward towards greater climate resilience

regards
Chris
