About forest conservation

Forests are under the spotlight as never before. They are globally important in regulating climate and locally important in sustaining communities and supporting biodiversity. But with unsustainable logging, and agriculture and biofuel producers competing for land, forests, and the people who depend on them, are under increasing pressure.

Women in Ohiamatu Simpa, Ghana, discussing the future of their landscape

Listening, talking and working together to manage Ghana’s forests

Multi-stakeholder dialogues, or MSDs, are a useful way of bringing together different interest groups towards the common goal of sustainable management and conservation of natural resources. When IUCN first started working to reduce illegal logging in Ghana in 2005, it realized that none of the groups concerned were speaking to each other. IUCN brought the government, civil society, the private sector and the forest communities to the same table for the first time and has been having success ever since, in reducing conflicts, enabling sustainable natural resource management and improving local livelihoods in Ghanaian forested landscapes. Map of landscape options, Liberia

Understanding diversity: a study of livelihoods and landscapes in Liberia

Similarly, while the importance of forests and forest products in rural livelihoods is generally acknowledged, there has been little systematic study and analysis of just how forests fit into rural livelihoods. There is a danger that community forestry policy will be based on a false assumption that there is some sort of vacuum of
institutional arrangements in rural areas and that standardized models of community forestry management will be developed and imposed on diverse existing community forestry management practices..." …
