Effective management of captive populations i.e.in zoos, can lead to the re-introduction of a species that has gone extinct in the wild. Therefore, conservation breeding has an extremely important role in today’s zoos and aquariums with international collaboration and sharing of information being vital to effective conservation.
The IUCN SSC Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG) is a global network of conservation professionals that provides species conservation planning expertise to governments, Specialist Groups, zoos and aquariums, and other wildlife organizations. CBSG supports a “One Plan Approach:” integrated conservation planning for a species both inside and outside its natural range and under all conditions of management, with all responsible parties and available resources engaged to produce one comprehensive conservation plan for the species. Using expert facilitation and the application of science-based planning tools, CBSG works collaboratively to save threatened species by increasing the effectiveness of species conservation efforts worldwide.
