The Spanish fir: a story for the ages

This month we delve further into the lush and wonderful world of plants, with an inspiring story of survival despite the odds. Do we have a mammoth tale in store for you.

Wandering through a forest in the mountains of Andalusia, you suddenly find yourself at the foot of a magnificent tree. More than just a plant, she is a living relic of a bygone era. Towering over you and hundreds of years old, she is one of the last of her kind, the descendant of an ancient population which once inhabited larger swathes of the Mediterranean. She has inspired local folklore, been declared a Natural Monument, and indeed, she has a name: “Pinsapo de Escaleteras”, the Spanish Fir of Escaleteras (“little steps”).

 

A species with quite the origin story

When we think of the Mediterranean, we often think of pastoral landscapes dotted with majestic oaks, coastal cliffs lined with fragrant pines. But this month we are focusing on a perhaps less known but incredibly unique, rare and endemic Mediterranean tree. Please allow me to introduce you to the Spanish fir: an evergreen conifer that can grow up to a whopping 30 metres high. The Mediterranean's very own Christmas tree.  

The Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo) is restricted to only a few mountain enclaves in the provinces of Málaga and Cádiz in southern Spain, with the closely related Abies marocana inhabiting the Rif Mountains of Northern Morocco. The species’ distribution has a dramatic history which has been carved by the climatic evolution of the Mediterranean region. The Spanish fir is what is known as a relict species: it was once more widespread but can now only be found in small, isolated areas. As a fir, the species is adapted to cool, wet conditions. During glacial periods, the Mediterranean was much cooler and wetter than it is now, allowing the species to prosper and spread into places where it couldn't survive today (Costa del Sol: Ice Age edition).

However, after the global thermostat was turned up at the end of the last glacial period around 15,000 years ago, the warmer and drier conditions that developed caused the Spanish fir’s suitable habitat to shrink. Its populations retreated, seeking refuge in high-elevation mountain environments where suitable conditions persisted. Much like a certain famous rodent from the Ice Age film franchise - but instead of chasing an acorn, chasing the last remaining pockets of suitable habitat - and clinging on for dear life.

So, the modern distribution of the Spanish fir is a remnant of a larger historic distribution, shaped by this historical saga of population expansions and contractions. The species is currently confined to isolated habitat patches, known as “refugia”, where local conditions are sufficient for the species to survive. With cool and relatively moist conditions, these refugia are found in the peaks of mountain ranges, at altitudes of up to around 1,800 metres. The species occurs in both “pure” forests consisting of clusters of Spanish firs (known in Spanish as a “pinsapar”), and in “mixed” forests with other trees, including pines, oaks and maples.

Due to the geographical separation between the Spanish and Moroccan populations, they evolved independently on opposite sides of the Strait of Gibraltar, developing some differences and as of recent years considered to be different species.

As a species which is specialised to living in cooler climates, the Spanish fir's appearance is quite distinctive from its fellow Mediterranean trees. Spanish firs start out with a conical shape - a design feature for cold conditions, allowing snow to slide off - but tend to develop a more irregular form, which is often likened to the shape of a candelabra, in later life. They typically have a thick, dark grey trunk, from which its branches extend in horizontal rows. Its waxy, needle-shaped leaves are relatively short (typically 0.6-1.6 cm long) and arranged radially around the twigs. Its leaves have a striking “glaucous” appearance: their light blue-green colour gives the tree a slight silvery, frosted look. 

Like other firs, the Spanish fir reproduces using cones and relies on the wind for pollination. In spring, it produces small male cones that release clouds of pollen, while the larger female cones develop higher up in the tree. Once pollinated, the female cones gradually mature, becoming larger and packed with seeds. When the cones ripen, they break apart, releasing the seeds to be carried away by the wind, eventually settling on the earth (hopefully somewhere that will be up to standard).

More than just a tree, Spanish firs form a unique forest ecosystem with high ecological value, their evergreen canopies providing habitat for a wide variety of organisms. They are also an important symbol of natural heritage: the Spanish fir has weaved its roots into local culture, traditions and literature. Some of the most charismatic specimens have even become local celebrities - given names after their defining characteristics - and have inspired local legend.

Though it might be hard to believe, this majestic species, having persisted through millennia of global climatic changes and specialised to survive in harsh high-mountain conditions, is not invincible. Despite its remarkable story of survival despite the odds, the Spanish fir is threatened with extinction, and is currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Over time, it has suffered from threats such as overgrazing, fire, timber harvesting, and pests, which further diminished its populations. In recent years, significant conservation efforts have taken place to protect and restore the Spanish fir across its range. However, despite having survived drastic climatic fluctuations in the past, modern-day human-induced climate change represents an existential threat to the species – squeezing its populations even further to their limit.  

So, in the spirit of the resilience of the mighty Spanish fir, but also with awareness of its vulnerability, I will leave you with a quote from a fellow tree-hugger:  

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” (Dr Seuss).
