CBD Nairobi meetings 2026
IUCN will participate in the meetings of the subsidiary bodies of the Convention on Biological Diversity that will take place in Nairobi from 27 July to 12 August 2026.

The 28th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-28) and the 7th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-7) will take place from 27 July to 1 August 2026 and from 4 to 12 August 2026, respectively, in Nairobi, Kenya.
These meetings are where much of the Convention's substantive work takes place and represent a key milestone in the lead-up to the seventeenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17). The recommendations adopted by SBSTTA and SBI will form the basis of negotiations and decisions at COP17.
A key item on the agenda will be the consideration of the first global report on collective progress in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Based on its findings, Parties will develop recommendations for COP17 on how to accelerate biodiversity action during the remainder of the decade and achieve the Framework's 2030 targets.
Other issues to be discussed include an updated Programme of Work on Protected Areas, a thematic action plan for capacity-building on synthetic biology, and new global guidance on sustainable wildlife management. Building on the findings of the global report, Parties will also consider key means of implementation, including resource mobilization, capacity-building and development, the engagement of subnational governments, and a global action plan for biodiversity education.
IUCN at the CBD subsidiary body meetings
IUCN participates in these meetings to provide independent scientific expertise, technical advice and policy recommendations. Drawing on the knowledge of its Members, Commissions and Secretariat, IUCN supports Parties in developing evidence-based decisions and advancing the effective implementation of the Convention and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in the lead-up to COP17.
Informed by its Resolutions and Programme 2026-2029, IUCN's key messages and recommendations are presented in the position paper. These are complemented by a series of side events showcasing the knowledge, experience and expertise of the Union and its Members.
