International Vulture Awareness Day 2025: Communities in Bangladesh Unite to Save Endangered Vultures

Once abundant in Bangladesh, vultures now teeter on the brink of extinction. On 6 September 2025, communities near Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary came together to change that. IUCN Bangladesh in collaboration with the Forest Department organised an event to mark International Vulture Awareness Day at Rema Tea Garden Government Primary School, located near the Wildlife Sanctuary in Habiganj. The event, brought together students, community members, forest officials, and vulture conservation teams to raise awareness about the importance of vultures and their conservation.

Engaging Local Students and Communities
Around fifty students from Rema Government School and Chegangar Government School took part in drawing and Quick quiz competitions, sharing their understanding of vultures’ role in nature. Their artwork and answers reflected how these birds help keep the environment clean by consuming animal remains and reducing the spread of disease.

After the competitions, a discussion session was held with members of the Vulture Conservation Team, forest officials, the community, and veterinary experts. The session highlighted the importance of Rema-Kalenga as a key breeding site for the critically endangered White-rumped Vulture. Speakers emphasised community involvement in protecting nesting trees, reducing reliance on forest resources, and discouraging harmful practices.

Addressing Threats to Vultures
Participants expressed concern over threats such as poison baits and the use of harmful veterinary drugs like Flunixin. Experts encouraged the use of safer alternatives like Meloxicam and Tolfenamic Acid. They also discussed the government’s ongoing measures, including drug bans, safe zones, rescue efforts, and food support for vultures.
