The objective of Phase II is to have the Vjosa WRNP operationalised by early 2024 by establishing the Management structures, funding mechanisms, developing an Integrated Management Plan and a Tourism Master Plan, extending the boundaries and protecting the upper Aoos catchment in Greece, with the aim to create a transboundary Wild River National Park along the full length of the Aoos-Vjosa River basin, including all free-flowing tributaries, sources and delta area.
The next steps for the National Park in 2023 are:
1. Protected area governance, management, finance, operational set-up and capacity building
2. Planning - operational Integrated Management Plan, Tourism Master plan, sustainable community development, boundaries and zonation
3. Initiation projects - Visitor centre, sustainable tourism itineraries, restoration, conservation and regeneration
IUCN will support the implementation of the above components, execute project activities and ensure that studies and plans are prepared in accordance with IUCN international conservation standards and best practices, including the IUCN Green List and the Protected Area Management Category II.
