Boosting Nexus Framework Implementation in the Mediterranean (BONEX)

The BONEX project focuses on advancing the Water-Energy-Food-Environment (WEFE) Nexus framework by providing practical, context-adapted tools and technological innovations to enhance governance and policy integration in the Mediterranean region. The project aims to balance social, economic, and ecological trade-offs through transdisciplinary approaches.

Location: Mujib Basin, Jordan

Funded By: The PRIMA Program (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area)

Implemented By: International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Seven Demonstration Projects (DPs) were established across Jordan, Morocco, Italy, Portugal, Lebanon, Spain, and Tunisia to pilot and validate the WEFe Nexus Framework (WEFeF). These pilot projects serve to refine the framework for replicability, bridge gaps between governance and practical implementation, and develop nexus bridging plans with ranked solution strategies.

In Jordan, IUCN partnered with the German Jordanian University to implement a DP in the Dhiban area within the Wadi Mujib watershed. This project uses smart agricultural techniques, including soilless substrate culture and solar-powered drip irrigation with fertigation, designed to conserve water and improve adoption in a region challenged by scarce water resources, land degradation, high poverty, and low technology development. The DP is managed by a youth cooperative, emphasizing community empowerment.

The BONEX project also promotes awareness and dialogue on sustainable value chains, advocates for rural integration into national energy strategies, and facilitates the introduction of water-saving agricultural technologies.

Achievements

  • Participation in the WEFE NEXUS International Conference in Rabat, Morocco, themed "Exploring and Bridging NEXUS for a Sustainable Future," enhancing regional knowledge exchange and visibility of the project’s approaches.
